Jupiter is 87 miles north of Miami, and the northernmost community in the Miami metropolitan area, home to 6,012,331 people in a 2015 Census Bureau estimate. According to a 2018 Census Bureau estimate, Jupiter has a population of 65,524. The ages of the population of Jupiter are 20.7% under the age of 18, 5.1% from 18 to 24, 28.8% from 25 to 44, 26.5% from 45 to 64, and 18.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years and the median income for a household in the town is $76,687.
The area where the town now sits was originally named for the Hobe Indian tribe which lived at the mouth of the Loxahatchee River and whose name is also preserved in the name of nearby Hobe Sound. The most notable landmark is the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse which was completed in 1860 and can be toured daily for a nominal fee.
Jupiter has a trade-wind tropical rainforest climate, meaning much of the year is warm to hot and frost is extremely rare. Typical of South Florida, there are two basic seasons, a mild and dry winter (November through April), and a hot and wet summer (May through October). Daily thundershowers are common in the hot season, and hurricane season runs from June thru November.
The School District of Palm Beach County provides public education to the town of Jupiter and is also home to several private and religious schools. Universities and colleges in the area are the Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College and the Florida Atlantic University – John D. MacArthur campus.
